Third Party Payment Abuse

Is a trade being settled by a payer who is not the trade counterparty — an unrelated third party, split, or mismatched payment that breaks the link between the trade and the funds?

Third Party Payment Abuse settles a trade through a payer who is not the trade counterparty — an unrelated third party, split settlement, or a payment that does not match the trade. The payment breaks the link between the trade and the funds, letting value enter or leave under cover of a legitimate-looking transaction while the true source or destination of the money is obscured.

Risk narrative

A customer's trade with a counterparty is settled not by that counterparty but by an unrelated third party, sometimes across several split payments. The trade documents describe a bilateral transaction; the settlement shows a different payer. The mismatch breaks the trade-to-funds link and lets value move through the trade without a traceable source. Where the counterparty is a shell and the parties share ownership, the third-party settlement is a laundering channel rather than a commercial convenience.
